FACES Ministry in Alausí grows by 50%

When we travel to the Indian communities where the FACES kids originate from, we explain to the parents the dangers of living in the city, the way child labor affects their children’s development, and the difficulties of trying to keep a working adolescent in school, should we be able to reinsert them after they have dropped out for several years.  One community of parents is “getting it.”  “We’ve decided to bring all the kids home from the city,” they told me.  “The government is going to help us start a high school here in the village.  We’ve all signed an agreement.  We’re going to pull our kids out of work and put them in high school right here at home.”  This one seemingly small decision on the part of the parents and community leaders is actually huge in terms of the change in thinking it represents. With help with the cost of school supplies, the 30 8th graders are now back in school, living at home, and enjoying a normal adolescence.
